After a mammoth was discovered under the Reser Stadium northern end zone in 2016 during renovations and with the relatively new 2013 beaver still facing some pushback from students and alumni, an opportunity was quite literally, unearthed. A quick sketch and post to the OSU meme facebook page before class turned out to be a little more exciting than I imagined.

Oregon State has had a relatively choppy history with mascots – originally the coyotes, followed by a human Presbyterian minister superfan, until finally landing on the Oregon state animal, the beaver. Compared to our rivals, the ducks, it's a pretty good mascot. Beavers are pretty dam cool. A mammoth is even cooler – maybe not to my parents.

That's one angry beaver. Source: OSU Special Collections & Archives Research Center. Benny Beaver gets the crowd pumped up at the 2001 Homecoming game against Cal. Photo was used in the 2001/2002 Beaver Yearbook, page 20.

The 2013 beaver was sleek, demanded attention, and made OSU and beavers as a species look legit. It was what was needed to draw in prospective athletes in the PAC12 filled with big money powerhouses. The new mammoth mascot takes and amplifies what the beaver had to offer and adds more hair.

It was important to go back to the Benny Era, a period filled with traditions – something seemingly absent upon observation of today's student section. A custom Oregon State typface paired with Feijoa feels familiar and fits comfortably in OSU's era of grotesque obsession. It feels warmer and less angry than today's identity - a common critique among colleagues - and breaks tradition from the mandatory slab serifs.

The subtle and not so subtle shapes of the mammoth bones and tusks played out in the type and icons. The badge comes in as an assist to help tie athletics to the University by incorporating the Oregon crest and referencing the land, sun, space, and sea grant.

As much as I wish this were real... it is not... no matter how much I force it on people. What started out as a before-class time-filler got me a free tshirt and a sticker for my parent's car which is pretty rad. It also ended up on the annual hat for the anthropology department? I never got one so I'm not totally sure, but I bet they looked great. This project is continously evolving in my head so check back yearly.
