The Mission Bay Resort, situated on the boardwalk of Mission Bay needed to have a sense of natural ease to it just like the locals. It isn't trying to be San Diego, it just is. I began looking to old historical photos of the property and the lifeguard towers that dotted the beaches for Diegan inspiration. There was an interesting color-blocking and civil discourse type of story there that would be the foundation to the new identity.

On the water, and steps away from many of San Diego's draws, the resort is an active hub for guests. An exploration of "active" type played with the physical movement of the sun and the water. Containing shapes referencing surf culture and the interior design of the buildings offered variation. It all centered back to the mixing pot identity that San Diego owns well.

Graphic and material nods to San Diego’s surf-and-skate culture and the idea of civic disobedience and grit are considered through a system of type, shape, and color. Shapes taking inspiration from the sun, sea, and resort are used in unexpected places throughout the property to strengthen the identity throughout the guest experience. The type system employs Domaine Sans Text and Interstate to add unfussy luxury and confidence.

Evoking surf culture from the era of the property’s birth as Del Webb’s Ocean House, Mission Joe marries ’60s flair with SoCal skate cred to become a destination in itself. Dig into the local favorite acai bowl while you sip your classic cappuccino and scroll through Instagram. An irreverent tone layered into the midcentury design characterizes a coffeehouse worthy of straying from the boardwalk.
