The port-a-potty industry is booming thanks to the construction industry’s rapid growth over the last decade. Many in the industry don't think consumers care about a brand when they’re sitting on the bucket and as a result many don’t consider their brand worth investing in. A sticker is often enough. This leaves an open spot in a field of 3,500+ to stand out, even just slightly, and show that they care about consumer experience. It’s a personal business because they’re doing personal business. It doesn't need to be awkward.

The need for port-a-potties outside of construction sites is growing as a result. Luxury potties with vacuum toilets are starting to pop up, but high costs limit the demand. Bigger port-a-potty manufacturers are just starting to come out with new, but limited color options for the outer shells to seize the need for ‘friendlier’ potties without the cost of luxury ones. Capitalizing on this new trend, Honey Bucket is now providing customization services to meet the demands of a new America.

          Honey Bucket, with a large stake in the West Coast, succeeds in creating a personalized experience that makes toilets fun, if you ever considered them boring – I know I've never gone into a port-a-potty expecting anything different from the last time I stepped in one. 

After spending two summers in a research lab working with algae for biofuel applications I became intrigued about other potential applications for the work I was doing. At a macroscopic level the colors and movement of these colonies was hypnotizing and at a microscopic level the diatoms provided a totally different visual experience. The goal of this project was to capture that in promotional materials and packaging. 

          Honey Bucket, with a large stake in the West Coast, succeeds in creating a personalized experience that makes toilets fun, if you ever considered them boring – I know I've never gone into a port-a-potty expecting anything different from the last time I stepped in one. 

          Honey Bucket maintains high sanitary standards, has quick and reliable service, and listens to customer feedback. They seek great customer experiences and relationships, and especially value a good sense of humor in such a crappy business.

The 1970's were the golden era of portable sanitation. With newly patented polyethylene portable restrooms hitting the roads, the potty game was changed forever. Even in 2020, as I sit in my house writing this, nothing has changed – a testament to good science and good design.

Drawing inspiration from corporate identities of the 1970's was an obvious choice in going towards a refresh that went back to its roots. It was clean, classic, and stood out in a field where competitors were doing the absolute most.

An identity centered around bees felt totally appropriate with a shift in voice, vision, and product that lent itself to the comical and literal.

          A new customization service built on grids made graphic nods to honeycombs and bees a no-brainer. Don't tell my professor this, but I just really wanted to bring mascots back. Their old color palette and stripes hit the right vintage notes, but needed a bit of updating to feel more sophisticated (yes, sophisticated) and to work better digitally.

          I truly believe humor can and should always find a way into design and this project, although quite apparent in its applications, can show that. In times like these it can really go a long way.
